Methodology

Population is from Census Bureau table B01003, 1-year American Community Survey estimates. Land area is from the Census Bureau Gazetteer place file of the same vintage (ALAND_SQMI), which excludes water. Density is population divided by land area, computed by us. Large cities that include big areas of undeveloped land, such as Anchorage, Jacksonville or Oklahoma City, have low densities even though their urban cores are much denser.

Puerto Rico and other US territories are not included. Rankings use competition ranking: tied values share a rank.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most densely populated city in the US?

Among places with 65,000+ residents, Union City, NJ, at 51,995 people per square mile.

Does land area include water?

No. Density uses land area only, so cities with large harbors, lakes or bays are not penalized.

How dense is New York City?

Use the filter box to find it: New York has the most people of any US city, and well over 25,000 per square mile across all five boroughs.
